Joseph Holmes is a New York street photographer capturing the lives and spaces of the city that he loves. His work is a series of portraits, of people and place that share not just a New York connection, but expose an identity we can all connect with. We will be showcasing all three of his series, his most popular, AMNH, images taken at the American Museum of Natural History, striking yet subtle, the colorful dioramas a backdrop for the silhouettes of the people who view them. Workspaces, capturing the private lives people carry with them in public spaces, and lastly his newest series, CBGB, images of the legendary rock club, now closed. Shot during daylight hours, the images showcase the club resting before its nightly jump start into frenzied motion.

Bishop’s work is in numerous public and private collections and been exhibited widely throughout the United States, including exhibitions at Seattle Art Museum, Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art and San Francisco Museum of Art.

Prior to moving to Brooklyn sixteen years ago Jeffrey Bishop lived in Seattle and was represented by Linda Farris Gallery and Myerson & Nowinski Gallery.

Bishop has an MFA from the University of Washington. He is currently on the Board of Trustees of Bang on the Can and Independent Curators International in NYC and on the Advisory Board of Henry Art Gallery in Seattle.

Traver Gallery in SeattleEthan Stern Exhibition

The Traver Gallery is presenting a solo exhibition of new work by Seattle glass artist Ethan Stern. The show includes a selection of the artist’s weighty, often asymmetrical abstract sculptures. Adorned by patterns and markings reminiscent of topographic maps and the outlines of continents, Stern’s new sculptures hint at the motifs of exploration and discovery.

Stern surveys the surfaces of his objects, and like a stone or wood carver, he engages in a dialogue with his forms as he cuts them, allowing imagery that seems to have always existed inside the multiple layers of glass to emerge from within. Unlike a stone or wood carver, however, Ethan himself made the objects he is examining. Because he is both the creator and the explorer of the forms, each piece is a journey of self-exploration, reflection and acceptance.

The work presented in Marked displays the sensitivity and inquisitiveness that we have come to expect from Ethan Stern, yet it also demonstrates a deeper, more sophisticated understanding of form, color and texture. His artistic journey has brought him to a place where he is able use these qualities to create a sense of equilibrium in forms he has purposely designed to rest precariously. Ethan’s new work displays a sense of wisdom, maturity, and self-confidence – and represents an exciting step forward in the career of a talented young artist.

Ethan Stern studied ceramics at TAFE College of Ceramics in Brisbane, Australia before earning his BFA from Alfred University in 2001. He has since completed artist residencies at the Appalachian Center for Craft in Tennessee, the University of Wisconsin at Madison, the University of Texas at Arlington, the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary and the Creative Glass Center at Wheaton Village in New Jersey. His work has been shown in gallery exhibitions throughout the United States, and was recently included in the prestigious “Young Glass” exhibition mounted by the Ebeltoft Glass Museum in Denmark. Ethan lives and works in Seattle, where he recently established his own cold working studio.

Gallery IMASandro Negri Exhibition and Reception

Sandro Negri was born in the village of Virgilio in Lombardy, Italy in 1940. He grew up among several generations of peasants in an ancestral farmhouse observing and absorbing the age-old agricultural traditions and rituals. His experiences in Italy's most fertile farm region, the Pianura Padana, provided the themes for his paintings such as the peasant figure draped in a dark "tabarro" in a winter scene, women gathering flowers in springtime, and fields of grain in summer. It is impossible not to be fascinated, transported, and bewitched by his astonishing paintings called by a French critic "joy found again in lost paradise".

Sandro began exhibiting primarily in Italy. His fame grew beyond the Italian border, and he was soon exhibiting throughout Europe, publishing his first monograph in 1976. By the mid-1990's he was also showing in the United States and Canada. Two drawings were purchased for the Vivian and Gordon Gilkey permanent collection at the Portland Art Museum in 1997. A thirty-year retrospective exhibit of Sandro'€™s work was held at Casa del Mantegna in Italy in 2000 and the lush catalogue was produced to accompany that exhibit.

In conjunction with his show at Brian Marki Fine Art in Portland, OR, May 5th to 31st.

Artists Peter deLory and Richard Morhous have collaborated
to produce a new series entitled "Neon Suite," which pairs architectural views in paint and pigment print. deLory's color photography and Morhous' acrylic paintings of the same scenes are paired to create bright diptychs of urban subjects. The neon subjects captured by deLory were photographed during the day, with the exception of "Noir." Morhous, inspired by these images tranforms them into night scenes with his characteristic saturated palette. The artists have neighboring studios in Seattle's Pioneer Square.

Catherine Person Gallery Hannah Alex-Glasser - Strata

Catherine Person Gallery is currently exhibiting the ceramic work of Hannah Alex-Glasser. The work is quiet and understated, with unglazed rough-textured matte surfaces. Her hand-formed sculpture is built from hundreds of layers of clay, kiln fired first and then buried in the ground and pit fired again.

Statement by artist:
Underlying my work is a feeling of deep connection with nature, whose beauty, complexity and integrity have been, for me, a constant source of centering and awe. My work is inspired by the natural environment, the lasting and archaic substances of our given world and bodies -- stone, bone, earth, wood, shell. But it is equally rooted in the symbolic realm of the inner world and of the experience of being human. I follow images as they arise from within and simultaneously respond to those presented by the outer world. Strata -- layering of earth, cells, calcium, of waves, of the effects of erosion, the layering of time, of experience, of consciousness --intermingle, co-exist, interconnect.

First Thursday for Seattle Galleries

Tonight, Thursday evening, April 3rd, is the monthly gallery
walk in Pioneer Square and Downtown Seattle. Most of top art galleries are opening new exhibitions. Galleries are usually open from 6-8pm. The Seattle Art Museum lets visitors in for free until 9pm. Baas Art Gallery and Framing Julia Ricketts and Ruth Hesse

Baas Art Gallery is currently showing print artist Ruth Hesse
and painter Julia Ricketts.

Ricketts shows new works that feature horizontal bands of color
in a grid format. Based on the image of ruled writing paper, the paintings in this series evoke letters, poems, and chords of music. Hesse exhibits new monotypes composed of rich colors and solid, refined forms. The imagery recalls the primary elements of land, sky, and water. Her prints are distinguished by layered textures that convey the evolution of each image.

The exhibition, will be on view through April 12th.

In her recent work, Ricketts employs an abstract vocabulary of forms combined in rhythmic compositions. Her new series, "Meditations", explores tonal variation within a format inspired by ruled writing paper. Bands of subtle color create horizontal chords, suggesting phrases of music or lines of poetry.

Layer upon layer of richly colored ink creates vibrant depth in Ruth Hesse's original monotypes. Her new body of work features abstracted imagery drawn from the natural world. Bands of color recall elements of land, water, and sky. These images are balanced against the constraints of a square format, which empasizes the formal aspect of Hesse's project.

The artist says, “This particular group of works includes pieces that are paintings of simple, rather conventional houses. I was in the grocery store last month buying soup and looked up to see Andy Warhol’s “Can of Soup,” and I thought to myself, ‘how could he take a simple can of soup and describe the entire psyche of America?’ This is what I have tried to do with my art. Instead of a soup can, I use little houses, the places we live - -simple farm buildings and structures seen in our daily lives. In this way I hope to capture the essence of American life.”

Brock grew up in the farm country around Carmel, California and relocated to the Pacific Northwest after college. He received his B.F.A. from the University of California at Davis where he had the privilege of studying with painter Wayne Thiebaud.

Alden Mason / Foster White Gallery

This month, Alden Mason is on display at Foster White Gallery in Pioneer Square. The is a large exhibition featuring new works as well as paintings done in the 90's.

Alden Mason is a prolific, contemporary Northwest Master. Born in Everett, Washington in 1919, Mason earned his MFA from the University of Washington in 1947. He taught painting at the University of Washington from 1949 to 1981. Throughout his career, Mason has used a variety of mediums from oil to acrylic. After becoming sensitive to the toxicity of his materials, he then moved to watercolor and oil stick. The exhibition will continue through March 1st.

Although the imagery and media used by Mason have gone through many changes over the years, his paintings always exhibit exuberance and inventiveness in form, color, and style. Mason draws inspiration from Arshile Gorky, Willem de Kooning, Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso, and the many different cultures he has encountered while traveling. He has exhibited with Foster/White Gallery since 2003.

Mason’s work can be found in the collections of the Henry Art Gallery, Seattle Art Museum, Tacoma Art Museum, Museum of Northwest Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Portland Art Museum, Milwaukee Art Museum, and many private and corporate collections in the US.

Francine Seders Gallery / Ben Frank Moss

This is a good month to venture out to the Francine Seders Gallery. The gallery is presenting an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Ben Frank Moss. The exhibition will continue through March 30th.

As a landscape painter, Moss works to establish a sense of "place" in his work. He is a conscientious observer of light and space as shaped by time and season and brings these observations to his work. In his small oil on paper paintings, he uses color, form, and gesture to evoke memories of "place".

Ben Frank Moss was born in Philadelphia in 1936. He studied at Whitworth College in Spokane (B.A., 1959) and Boston University (M.F.A. 1963). Moss currently teaches at Dartmouth College and has studios in both New Hampshire and Washington where he summers. His work has been included in solo, group, and invitational shows throughout the United States and abroad since the late 1960's. Moss is represented by several galleries on the east coast, and his work has been included in shows at the Seders Gallery since 1967.

Howard House / Gretchen Bennett Exhibit Plus Group Exhibit Curated by Bennett

Howard House is presenting two exhibitions opening on February 28th. Hello, features new work by Gretchen Bennett, and Supernature, curated by Bennett, features seven New York based artists working in a range of different media. Bennett will be talking about the two exhibitions at noon on Saturday, March 1st.

In her latest body of work, Gretchen Bennett continues her process of collecting and gathering found materials. No longer tracing the geographical iconography of the Northwest, she widens her focus to include an in-depth look at the pop-culture iconography of the area through drawings of the band Nirvana and its lead singer Kurt Cobain.

Gretchen Bennett received her MFA at Rutgers University in 2001, and has exhibited widely on both coasts. Hello is Bennett's second solo show at Howard House.

Curated by Gretchen Bennett, Supernature examines the notion of the perfect landscape, but instead of presenting an idealized or romanticized view of the natural world, the artists allow for the possibility that the perfect landscape can be found in hybrid and abandoned settings. The show is a collection of assembled topography acting as shallow landmarks, however bare or stylized.

Susan Dory’s abstract paintings investigate themes of repetition, variation, and time. Flowing shapes, which are simultaneously linear and biomorphic, are organized within complex, structured patterns. By overlapping these translucent forms, Dory creates a layered effect that serves as a visual document of time. This effect not only allows viewers to see through one field and into another, it also creates a distinct, tactile quality upon the surfaces of her paintings.

Nishigawara’s art explores human and social relationships while investigating personal thoughts of the inner-self. A toy donkey image is portrayed in several of his works, symbolizing our culture’s malleability as a result of commercialization. We are easily influenced, Nishigawara suggests.

G. Gibson Gallery / Laura McPhee Exhibit

G. Gibson Gallery is opening a new exhibition this week, featuring the photographs of Laura McPhee. An artist reception and talk is planned for this Saturday, February 23rd at 3:00 pm.

The Alturas Foundation selected artist Laura McPhee as its Artist-in-Residence in 2003. The Alturas Foundation is dedicated to visual arts and American culture. McPhee worked during the next 2 years in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho, documenting the conflict between development and preservation of this striking landscape of the American West. The work is grand in scale yet personal in interpretation.

Laura McPhee is a professor of photography at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, Massachusetts. Her work is included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Getty Center Museum, Los Angeles; the San Francisco Museum of Fine Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. In 1998 Laura was awarded a Fulbright Scholars’ fellowship to India and Sri Lanka, and in 1993 a Guggenheim.
